The previews for “QUEEN & SLIM” are very transparent and one gets the gist of the storm line very clearly.
What the previews can’t capture is the race issues that are ever-present, powerful & raw in this film. No doubt lots of folk will just stay away from this movie due to the story line but very happy I went.
Daniel Kaluuya (Ernest/Slim) and Jodie Turner-Smith (Angela/Queen) are clearly not 2 peas in a pod. She just passed the bar and clearly on a career path. Ernest is just a regular seemingly nice guy.. Their 1st date didn’t really go anywhere and one thought they would part ways forever. Then on the way home they were pulled over (per the previews) and their lives would come together through a common survival mission.
You have a sense that this movie in some ways is a romance and no doubt also a drama. The emotion pulls of this movie (the good, the bad & the ugly) are fabulously supported by a magnificent score/soundtrack.
I think comparisons to the Bonnie & Clyde movie are a serious stretch.. You have similarities in their flight from the law, but the race component is only existent here and adds a huge emotional pull (you pick the direction). Tough issue.
Not for many folk but very good for folks with eyes wide open.
