Dear Editor,

My name is Brenda Martell, I am a constitute of New Jersey who residences in Freehold. I am writing to express my concern about the current gun violence epidemic.

As the presidential election is approaching I have heard candidates voice out their concern for our safety and the measurements they would implement on gun violence when elected, but things can be done know. As part of the advocacy program for FCNL (Friends Committee on National Legislation); I was taught how to lobby. With the skills obtained I am encouraging others to lobby and make their voices heard especially with the current bill (S.42) Background Check Expansion Act that will be up for a vote.

This bill when passed would require a background check for every firearm sold. It is up to the constitutes of New Jersey to visit both Senator Menendez and Senator Booker's office and encourage them to cosponsor and or sign the bill. As this topic has gone unseen for so long there have been countless deaths in our community at the hands of guns.

Guns need to be prevented from reaching in the had of wrong individuals that would utilize it as a weapon of fear and cause tremendous pain in our communities. This is a call for action, for all residents in New Jersey to voice out their concerns and opinions on the present bill. The issue of gun violence has been going on for many years it is now that it has received some spotlight due to the election.

Let use the current momentum and make a change, so our children and the next generation don’t have to live in a constant state of fear. Its time to stop this epidemic and demand action from our senators. We must our senators to speak to their colleagues who are more opposed to this bill and be a voice for our fellow Americans that don’t live in states that have stricter regulations on guns.
