HIGHLANDS, NJ - The Historical Society of Highlands will host Robert A. Mayers, local author and Revolutionary War Historian, at7:30 PM, Thursday, June 25 at the VFW Hall, 331 Bay Ave Highlands,N.J. The event is free and open to the public His topic will be “The War At The Shore”
The strategic seashore From the Bay Shore and Sandy Hook south along the coast through Monmouth and Ocean Counties was the setting for bloodshed, violence and occupation by the enemy during the American Revolution. Americans fought not only the British but their Loyalist neighbors. Many fascinating events occurred in Highlands during the War for Independence. There was a battle on the “Heights of the Navesink” on Rt. 36 and a massive troop evacuation when 16,000 Redcoats marched down Linden Ave. into the lower town after the battle of Monmouth in 1778.

Hazlet, NJ - Congratulations to Morgan Dickens, Bryan Rothman & Patrick Auld - winners of the Hazlet Business Owners Association’s 2015 Scholarship Program. The three winners are all residents of Hazlet Township. Morgan Dickens, the first place winner was awarded $1,000 for taking first place. Bryan Rothman, the second place winner was awarded $500, and Patrick Auld, the third place winner, also awarded $500. All three students attend Raritan High School.

Historical Association Grand Opening and Lighting June 18, 6-8pm
FREEHOLD, NJ – A grand opening for Spirituals to Soul: African American Musical Heritage in Monmouth is being held at the Monmouth County Historical Association Museum at 70 Court Street on June 18 from 6-8pm. This exhibit explores the history of black music in Monmouth County from 1880 to 1980 and will feature the development of spirituals, jazz, gospel, rhythm & blues, doo wop, and soul music along with the places where they appeared.

Shrewsbury, NJ - On Saturday, June 27, the Eastern Branch of the Monmouth County Library, located at 1001 Route 35 in Shrewsbury, will be presenting the film “Shadows” at 1:30pm. Tackling the subject of bullying, “Shadows” was produced by the Cinematique School in Eatontown, in association with the Performance with Passion Players. The brainchild of Cathy Jenkins (Wanamassa), Debby Schwartz (Tinton Falls) and Rafe Serebreny (West Long Branch), the film utilized students from Cinematique, as well as local actors.
