Leonardo Citizens Committee Holds Meeting

Leonardo, NJ - On Thursday, April 29, the Leonardo Citizens Committee held its monthly meeting. The President of the committee, Andrew Bane, called to order the meeting. A number of topics were discussed. The first topic discussed was that of the committee making the Spring Plunge, which is held on the Leonardo Beach in mid-March, an annual fundraiser. This year it was held on March 20, and was a big success, where a good number of people participated in the event.

The 9/11 Memorial Wall, which once stood on the end of Concord Avenue by the Leonardo State Marina, was completely damaged by the storms that occurred in March. Many local residents are upset over this collapse. There was discussion of where the wall should be rebuilt. Some suggested Croydon Hall, others near the Middletown Train station, but it was pointed out, that the Middletown Memorial is located near the train station. More on the matter will be discussed at the next meeting.

The topic of tax appeals was discussed. Many residents on the bayshore had their taxes raised and are upset. Many of the people went to Freehold last year to appeal, but were not successful, and have moved on to the State level.

The last issue discussed was the subject of beach replenishment. Kenny Vu, a Burlington Avenue resident, reported he had attended an Army Corp of Engineers meeting two years ago, where such things as beach replenishment and seawall were discussed. No one had any current information on the Army Corps plans.

The meeting was then adjourned.

AH Shade Tree Honors Wuesthoff's with Tree Planting

ATLANTIC HIGHLANDS, NJ - George H. and Alma L. Wuesthoff will be honored for their community service with a tree planting at a 10:30 a.m. ceremony on Friday, April 30 at Veterans Park, opposite Borough Hall.

Wuesthoff is the retired long-time Atlantic Highlands Elementary School superintendent and a former borough councilman. Mrs. Wuesthoff is a retired teacher and pianist and is active in the local book club, among other organizations.

Mr. Wuesthoff is also a former teacher, a member of the Atlantic Highlands Public Library Board and treasurer of All Saints Episcopal Church, Navesink. He is a past member of the Shade Tree Commission and the Atlantic Highlands Harbor Commission.

The tree will be planted as part of the Shade Tree Commission's program to honor worthy local residents.

Nearly 1,500 Pounds of Donated Supplies Shipped to Middletown Marine in Afghanistan

MIDDLETOWN – Nearly 1,500 pounds of supplies and snacks donated by locals are on their way to Afghanistan to USMC 1^st Lt Nicholas Abbate.

The Middletown Support the Troops Program was reactivated in March to collect supplies for the township native and his 80-plus infantry unit. “The immediate outpouring of support from the community was impressive,” said Mayor Gerard P. Scharfenberger. “Cases of ramen noodles, Girl Scout cookies, drink mixes, teas, toiletries and batteries were among the items donated by businesses, community groups, schools and families from Middletown and surrounding towns.”

Middletown shipped nearly three-quarters of a ton of supplies to 1st Lt Nicholas Abbate thanks to the efforts of many volunteers, community organizations, and individual donations. The Township Committee thanked the programs key supporters during the April meeting.

Two pairs of military-issue boot socks for every marine was included in the shipment thanks to the collaborative efforts of Middletown Elks 2179 and Lawrence Fuchs, a long-time resident who served nearly four years in the Marine Corps. The Elks Veterans Committee worked with Fuchs at his request to acquire the socks along with cases of snacks and toiletries. The Army & Navy Trading Hut, Keyport, provided the socks at a discounted rate in support of the collection drive. Fuchs, who has lived in Middletown since 1962, also supports the Marine Scholarship Foundation and Middletown Arts Center.

Townwide Garage Sale Registration Underway

ATLANTIC HIGHLANDS, NJ - It’s spring, and time for the Atlantic Highlands Annual Townwide Garage Sale. This year’s sale will be on Saturday, May 15, with raindate May 16.

Residents who wish to sell items must register at Borough Hall by May 1. The Borough will create a map of all participating homes and distribute it on the day of the sale in front of Borough Hall.

Don’t miss this easy, stress-free way to get rid of your unwanted items and make a few dollars too.

At this year’s event, the Atlantic Highlands Yacht Club’s Ms. Race Committee will have a table selling used and donated nautical items. All proceeds will go to 180 Turning Lives Around (www.180nj.org), a local non-profit dedicated to ending domestic violence. If you would like to donate any nautical items, please drop them off on the morning of the sale at the AHYC’s Ms. Race Committee table at the harbor near the gazebo/tennis courts. Registrants, after the sale, your unsold items can earn money for our elementary school’s Spring Clothing Drive. Please leave your unsold items at the curb, and AHES PTO volunteers will collect them that evening. The following items are acceptable if bagged in black plastic trash bags: clothing, coats, small toys, handbags and belts, linens, curtains, pillows and towels. Oyster Point Hotel Hosts An ArtVentures Exhibit

Red Bank, NJ - Original works of art by ArtVentures, a New Jersey based art group, will be on display at the Oyster Point Hotel in Red Bank throughout May and June. Over 40 distinctive creations consisting of paintings in watercolor and acrylics, and soft art of hand woven fiber, are being featured as part of the hotel’s ongoing showcase of local artists’ works.

The seven ArtVentures artists are Lise Kusner, Gerda Liebmann, Edy Ottesen, Annette Margulies, Tyrrell Masse, Maggie Simplot, and Leona Tenebruso-Shultes, www.artventures.us. Their creations range in styles from representational to lyrical abstract. These professional artists are active members of the arts and cultural community in Monmouth County and surrounding counties in New Jersey. Their works are sold internationally, nationally and in particular throughout the tri-state area.

Kevin Barry, Project Manager for the Oyster Point Hotel, commented on the show noting “The Oyster Point is delighted to host an exhibit of these exceptional artists. Since the launch of the hotel’s Art Showcase a year ago we have brought over one hundred fifty works of art from six outstanding artists to the forefront of the community’s attention.
