- Details
- Category: News
ATLANTIC HIGHLANDS, NJ – Each year the proceeds from the Front Porch Club’s Chilifest 2010 go to a wonderful local cause. This year their charity of choice is a non-profit group, GoSprouts.org, and their Learning Garden project on the grounds of Atlantic Highlands Elementary School for the 2010/2011 school year.
GoSprouts.org, formed by Atlantic Highlands residents, Laurie Brekke and Hope Hanlon, will design & build a garden and outdoor classroom while working with teachers at the school to weave the garden into various subjects of the standard curriculum. Mrs. Hanlon, a former teacher, says, “We’d like to utilize the garden & outdoor classroom to enhance traditional curriculum disciplines with hands-on-learning [in a garden setting] where children actively participate with their teachers and enjoy nature”.
The Front Porch Club’s Chilifest 2010 is scheduled for Saturday, October 2 at 3:00pm (rain date is Oct. 3rd). Admission is $25.00 per person. Chili entrants and children under the age of 12 will be admitted free.
The proceeds from Chilifest 2010 will help GoSprouts.org create this wonderful Learning Garden. In turn, the proceeds will benefit the children attending Atlantic Highlands Elementary who will soon be able to enjoy the garden while working on their studies. Mrs. Brekke says, “There is nothing more important than getting our kids out into nature & providing them with strong environmental ties early on as well as teaching them the importance of sustainability and healthy eating, which are tenets that will last them a lifetime”.
You can RSVP to Chilifest by visiting The Front Porch Club website at www.frontporchclub.com. To learn more about GoSprouts.org and their future projects and events, visit them at www.gosprouts.org.

Middletown Township Adopts Reduced 2010 Budget

MIDDLETOWN, NJ – Township officials adopted an amended $64.7 million budget that reflects ongoing efforts to cut costs and keep the tax rate stable by cutting spending an additional $400,000.
“This year’s budget reflects a reduction of 40 staff positions, a salary freeze and across-the-board reductions in departmental operating budgets,” said Mayor Gerry Scharfenberger. “In sum, the Township’s amended budget represents a 2.67% increase in total property taxes in an extraordinarily difficult economic year.”
Under the amended budget, the municipal tax rate will increase 4.6 cents to 39.75 cents per $100 of assessed value. This equates to approximately $17 per month for the average Township home assessed at $435,000.
“This year, municipal taxes represent just 23% of a resident’s tax bill, with 62% being levied for schools and 15% for the county,” concluded Scharfenberger.
The adopted budget addresses nearly $10 million in lost revenue, including:
- $1.6 million cut in state aid.
- $1.4 million obligation for retroactive pay under resolved labor contracts.
- $1 million in increased health care costs and nearly $1 million in deferred excess claims from 2009.
- $900,000 for extraordinary snow and storm clean-up.
- $1.8 million in deferred pension payments mandated by the state.
- $1 million in property tax appeal refunds.
- $400,000 in lost recycling revenue.
The amended budget can be viewed on line at www.middletownnj.org
