Middletown, NJ — Every little bit helps, especially in all-volunteer organizations. The Middletown Township Office of Emergency Management recently accepted a 1997 E450 Ambulance donated by the Port Monmouth First Aid Squad. The ambulance was still used as a primary response vehicle, until April when in an effort to maintain costs, a new home was sought for the apparatus.

Atlantic Highlands Parade and Monument Dedication

ATLANTIC HIGHLANDS, NJ - Spectators lined up early along First Avenue to view the annual Memorial Day parade. Leading off the march was a color guard from Naval Weapon Station Earle followed by veterans, boys scouts, church groups, little leaguers, politicians, and emergency services personnel among others.
After the parade, a new monument was dedicated at Veterans Memorial Park to the memory of those Atlantic Highlands native who died in service to their county. Peter Doyle, commander of the American Legion C. Eugene Allen Memorial Post 141, presided over the ceremony. Members of the American Legion post and Grand Lodge of Freemasons laid wreathes. As the roll was called for the fallen servicemen, an American flag was placed in their honor at the foot of the new memorial.
Bernard Frotton, a former Post Commander, was awarded an American flag that had been flown twice during missions in Iraq.

Highlands Borough Library to Open

HIGHLANDS, NJ - The Highlands Boro Library will have a Grand Opening this Saturday June 5 2010 at noon. The Library is located in the towns’ Community Center on Snug Harbor Ave. There will be a ribbon-cutting ceremony, and refreshments will be served.
All are invited to the ceremony.
Highlands has not had a library for almost 15 years. Residents had to travel out of town to Sea Bright, Atlantic Highlands or further to be able to borrow books. Library Committee Chairperson Tara Ryan asked the Highlands Council to re-instate the library for over 13 years. When Mayor Anna Little took office she created the Library Committee to research options. Because of reduced budgets and cutbacks, the committee decided to return to the original library space in the Community Center. The Boro Council passed a resolution on April 21, and the volunteer committee under the direction of Mary Muller took swift action. They met 3x per week to cull and up-date the collection. The books were coded, labeled and shelved. The room is re-newed also. ALL work was done by volunteers, and the library will be run by volunteers. There will be no additional costs to the public to open this Boro Library.
The library is sharing space with other groups using the meeting room. Summer hours are Mon. 1:30-4, Thurs. 3-7 and Sat. 10-1. Membership in the Boro Library is free; residents must show proof of address when they apply.

Highlands: Parade starts at 1:00 p.m. from Huddy Park, Route: Bay Avenue ends at Veterans Memorial Park. Sponsored by American Legion Twilight Post.
Keyport: Parade starts at noon on Broad St. Route: Turns left on Broad Street and ends at Fireman's Park on West Front St. American Legion and VFW units will lead.
Union Beach: Parade starts at 1:00 p.m. from Soccer Field behind Borough Hall, 650 Poole Avenue. American Legion Post No. 321 will host.

Atlantic Highlands: Starts at 11:00 a.m. at the Municipal Harbor. Route: Along First Avenue to the Atlantic Highlands Elementary School, left on E. Washington Ave, right on Third Ave, Right on E. Lincoln, Right on First Ave and end at Veteran's Memorial Park. A new monument will be dedicated by the C. Eugene Allen American Legion Post 141.
Fair Haven: Parade starts at 9:00 a.m. at Knollwood School, Route: Ceremony at Fair Haven Firehouse and parade continues to Memorial Park, River and Fair Haven roads for a ceremony.
Hazlet: A ceremony will be held at 10:00 a.m. at Veterans Memorial Park, Union Ave., Sponsored by Hazlet Recreation Commission.
Holmdel: A ceremony will be held at 10:30 a.m. at Town Hall, Memorial Circle, sponsored by Holmdel VFW Post 5918
Little Silver: Parade starts at 8:30 a.m. at Parker Avenue. Route: Willow Drive to Borough Hall, 480 Prospect Ave. Ceremony at 9:00 a.m.
Middletown: Parade starts at 10:00 a.m. Route: Leonardville Rd. to Appleton Ave. to Center Ave. to Brevent Ave. Turn right onto Highland Ave.; left on Leonard Avenue and right on Viola Ave. to the American Legion Post 338 on Route 36. Parade scheduled to end about 11:30 a.m. The annual parade is held in cooperation with Middletown Township.
Monmouth Beach: Ceremony will be held at 10:00 a.m. at Monmouth Beach Firehouse, 24 Beach Road.
Red Bank: Ceremony will be held at 11 a.m. at Veteran's Monument, 51 Monmouth St.
Rumson: Parade starts at 10:00 a.m. Route: East on Blackpoint Road to River Road, turn left on River Road and proceed to Victory Park. Ceremony begins at 10:30 a.m.
Sea Bright: Ceremony will be held at 11:00 a.m. at the Sea Bright Fire House, Ocean Avenue.
West Long Branch: Ceremony at 11:00 a.m. at West Long Branch Community Center.
Harmony Fills the Halls at Highlands Elementary

HIGHLANDS, NJ - When it comes to school budget cuts, music is among the first to go. This is of great concern to performing artists everywhere. The Red Bank Area Chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society started a program 5 years ago to help support vocal music in our schools. The Barbershop Festival of Harmony for 4th Graders is a cooperative program between Atlantic Highlands Elementary School, Highlands Elementary School and the Red Bank Area Chapter.
In May, a barbershop quartet visited the 4th grade music class at both schools and demonstrated harmony and sang a few songs to the students.
The Matinee Idles Barbershop Chorus performs for students at Highlands Elementary School.
On Monday, Atlantic Highlands students were bussed to Highlands Elementary for the annual concert. The program began with the students performing songs, a cappella, or without accompaniment, from songbooks entitled Keep America Singing. The books were purchased by the Red Bank Chapter 5 years ago for both schools. The children sang songs like, I Love the Mountains, I Got Rhythm, My Favorite Things, What a Wonderful World and You Are My Sunshine at the performance.
