The Red Bank Guinness Oyster Festival - Sept 26

RED BANK, NJ - This street festival anticipates a great time had by one and all and is fashioned after the 56 year old Galway Oyster Festival which celebrates the opening of the Oyster season.

The event is scheduled for September 26th, 12-7 PM, in Downtown Red Bank in the White Street Parking Lot, with entrances on White Street and Monmouth Street. It will be a huge food and music festival which will showcase Red Bank’s excellent restaurants as well as entertain thousands with great, live music! It will also be a family friendly event.

Headlining at the Red Bank Guinness Oyster Festival is the fabulous Irish rock band “2U – The World’s 2^nd Best U2 Show” along with Peter Karp and Sue Foley, McLean Avenue, Brian Kirk and the Jirks, Robert Ender and more…

These talented musicians will be performing on two stages with a mix of Irish music, blues and rock and roll.

The event will also be a culinary feast! There will be tons of GUINNESS and fresh OYSTERS plus 25 of Red Bank’s favorite restaurants will be serving a variety of specialty menu items including everything from Mini-Ruebens to Lobster Rolls.

Wine and lighter beers will also be available for purchase.

Proceeds from the Red Bank Guinness Oyster Festival will benefit the Jane H. Booker Cancer Center at Riverview Medical Center, The Cancer Institute of NJ Foundation
and Red Bank RiverCenter.

Admission is $5.00 for anyone over 13.

For more than 25 seasons, Bill Denver of Equi-Photo has documented that scene as official photographer for Monmouth Park Racetrack in Oceanport. And, beginning with a special cocktail reception on Thursday, September 16, the veteran lensman will offer a unique look inside the daily life of this iconic Monmouth County attraction, with an exhibit of recent photography entitled Racing at the Shore.

Middletown Township Adopts Reduced 2010 Budget

MIDDLETOWN, NJ – Township officials adopted an amended $64.7 million budget that reflects ongoing efforts to cut costs and keep the tax rate stable by cutting spending an additional $400,000.

“This year’s budget reflects a reduction of 40 staff positions, a salary freeze and across-the-board reductions in departmental operating budgets,” said Mayor Gerry Scharfenberger. “In sum, the Township’s amended budget represents a 2.67% increase in total property taxes in an extraordinarily difficult economic year.”

Under the amended budget, the municipal tax rate will increase 4.6 cents to 39.75 cents per $100 of assessed value. This equates to approximately $17 per month for the average Township home assessed at $435,000.

“This year, municipal taxes represent just 23% of a resident’s tax bill, with 62% being levied for schools and 15% for the county,” concluded Scharfenberger.

The adopted budget addresses nearly $10 million in lost revenue, including:

$1.6 million cut in state aid.

$1.4 million obligation for retroactive pay under resolved labor contracts.

$1 million in increased health care costs and nearly $1 million in deferred excess claims from 2009.

$900,000 for extraordinary snow and storm clean-up.

$1.8 million in deferred pension payments mandated by the state.

$1 million in property tax appeal refunds.

$400,000 in lost recycling revenue.

Hazlet Township Library Sponsors Get Help! With Housing Fair

HAZLET - Concerned about housing issues? Buying your first home? Facing possible foreclosure?

Meet representatives from government agencies and not-for-profit organizations specializing in housing issues at the Get Help! With Housing Fair on Wednesday, September 15, at the Hazlet Township Library, 251 Middle Road.

This free program will run from 3 to 7 p.m., and is co-sponsored by the N.J. Department of Banking & Insurance, the Monmouth County Library and the New Jersey State Library.

The Housing Fair will feature experts who can speak with the public on the topics of low income and Section 8 housing resources, tenants’ rights, first-time homebuyers and foreclosure procedure. Predatory lending scams and foreclosure rescue scams will be discussed. A Spanish interpreter will be available to assist patrons.

MIDDLETOWN, NJ - The Middletown Township Police Department Traffic Bureau advises that Tindall Road jughandle on Route 35 North will be closed on Tuesday, August 31 due to construction. Motorists can access Tindall Road and the Middletown Train Station via New Monmouth Road.
