Art Show at Sandy Hook Opens August 19

Lincroft, NJ –The Brookdale Community College Sandy Hook Field Station will host a display of watercolor and acrylic paintings at the Environmental Field Station, Building 53 on Fort Hancock near the historic Lighthouse. The Meet-the-Artists Opening Reception, open to the community, will be held Thursday, August 19 from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. The works featuring Sandy Hook subjects will be on exhibit through August 27. The reception and exhibit are free.
Watercolor instructor David Dziemian’s class introduced students to the techniques and processes of watercolor: the washes, texture applications, brush manipulations and stretched paper.
Amy Paris taught the Acrylic Painting class designed for more experienced students. Utilizing weekly critique sessions, the students evaluated their work with experimental techniques with media, size format and construction in context with problems in form and subject approach.
Twenty eight students were enrolled in the classes with six students taking both the Watercolor and Acrylic offerings.
“If you’ve not been out to this area of Sandy Hook, take this opportunity to enjoy the relaxing drive out through Monmouth County’s beautiful bay and oceanfront scenery. View our artists’ inspired works and enjoy light refreshments with us,” said Bob Macaluso, Brookdale’s Sandy Hook Field Station Manager.
For free access to the event, inform the attendant at the Sandy Hook entrance toll booth to the park that your destination is the Brookdale Community College Art Show. The Brookdale Field Station is located 300 feet west of the Sandy Hook Lighthouse.

Acclaimed tenor saxophonist Wayne Escoffery comes to Red Bank on July 30 and 31, as the Summer Jazz Café series continues at Red Bank’s Two River Theater.
A veteran of the Lonnie Plaxico, Ben Riley and Tom Harrell bands, the swinging saxmaster and his combo take it to Red Bank this weekend, as the next featured act in the 2010 Summer Jazz Café series. The July 30 and 31 sets are presented by New Jersey’s own Jazz Arts Project within the spacious yet cozy “black box” room of the Two River Theater.
Inside the modern performing arts facility — located just steps from NJ Transit’s public transportation station and an array of popular restaurants, with plenty of free off-street parking — Jazz Café patrons can enjoy coffee, tea and delectable treats at candlelit cocktail tables, while enjoying sounds from some of the most dynamic players on the regional scene.
Jazz Café continues on the weekend of August 6 and 7, when drummer, bandleader, producer and nightclub owner Cecil Brooks III closes down the joint in grand style. Area resident answers the president’s call to service
VINTON, Iowa - Highlands, NJ resident Lyndsay Senerchia is serving on her final project with the AmeriCorps NCCC (National Civilian Community Corps) North Central Region. Senerchia and her team are serving with Project Homecoming in New Orleans, LA until July 23rd rehabilitating homes that were devastated in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Work includes demolition, hanging drywall, laying tile, building cabinets and installing them, laying siding, and supervising volunteer groups.

Senerchia, the daughter of Anthony and Nancy Senerchia, graduated in 2004 from Middletown High School South, and has completed 5 projects with her NCCC team. Other projects included being construction workers for disaster recovery, training and participating in wildland firefighting, being tour guides for a wildlife sanctuary, being sawyers and improving timber stands, and assisting with other various assignments. Throughout their service, they have traveled to Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Lake Charles, Louisiana; Coralville Lake, Iowa; Spearfish, South Dakota; and now, their final destination of New Orleans, Louisiana.
Senerchia says, “This has been an overall amazing experience. In AmeriCorps NCCC I have had many ups and downs and I would not have changed anything. The experiences that I have had and the friends that I have made have impacted my life in positive ways.”
Specific accomplishments for the team include: renovated rooms in over 20 houses, cleared 534,400 lbs of debris, sorted 1,360 lbs of clothing, inventoried 3,850 lbs of food, removed 47,406 lbs of tree brush, transplanted/planted 52 trees, removed 3.6 acres of invasive plants, completed prescribed burns on 28.2 acres of land, removed 1,712 lbs of trash, cleaned 29 large animal facilities of excrement and animal carcasses, scrubbed 29 bird cages, removed over 5,120 pounds of urine soaked hay, gave tours to 1060 people, removed 1,560 lbs of noxious weeds, fed over 1200 lbs of raw meat to big cats, designed and built 5 structures for tigers and lions, painted a 9 x 24 foot mural, and numerous other tasks were completed as well.

Atlantic Highlands First Aid Squad and Fire Department Marine Units Respond to Stuck Boat

ATLANTIC HIGHLANDS – Members of the Atlantic Highlands First Aid & Safety Squad and the Atlantic Highlands Fire Department responded early Saturday morning to assist a boater stuck on pilings in the Atlantic Highlands municipal harbor.
The boaters from Northern New Jersey who were unfamiliar with the harbor ran into the pilings shortly after 1 a.m. They called for emergency assistance 90 minutes later as the tide was going out and the boat was unable to move.
The stranded pleasure boat remained stuck on pilings early Saturday morning in Atlantic Highlands.
The Atlantic Highlands First Aid’s 85-M-1 and the Atlantic Highlands Fire Department’s Marine 85 responded to the scene of the stranding, while AHFD chief Russell Mount and AHFAS chief Richard Huff set up command in the harbor. Crews also readied the AHFAS’ Zodiac boat for launch as well.
