Statement of the Holmdel Township Committee on Recent Events at the U.S. Capitol
- Details
- Category: Letters to the Editor
The very moment an elected official takes office, they take an oath. Before the people they serve, they vow to support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic, and to bear true faith and allegiance to the same. They vow to protect the very cornerstones of American democracy – free and fair elections, and a peaceful transfer of power.
The events at the U.S. Capitol this week threatened the fabric of our democracy. We condemn in the strongest terms the unlawful violence and the reckless disruption of institutions we hold in sacred trust. We especially keep in our hearts the Capitol Police Officer who lost his life fulfilling his duty.

To the editor,
If President-Elect Joe Biden is serious about addressing climate change, preventing future outbreaks of zoonotic disease, or minimizing animal cruelty on factory farms, he should support the nascent cultured-meat industry. This is simply too urgent to leave to the private sector. The United States should follow the example of Singapore and Israel in this regard.
First, what is cultured meat? Well, it's grown from cells, without slaughtering animals. This may sound like something out of Star Trek, but it's coming to a supermarket near you sooner than you might think. Dr. Mark Post created the first cultured-beef hamburger in 2013. It cost an incredible $280,000. Soon he believes that price could be reduced to $10. Still, more research is required to make cultured meat economically viable.

Parade Committee to Fund 2021 Beneficiary Shore House NJ and Local Organizations
Rumson, NJ – In light of the continued health pandemic the Rumson St. Patrick’s Day Parade Committee, in conjunction with Rumson Town Council and health department, has cancelled the 2021 Rumson St. Patrick’s Day Parade.
“With an abundance of caution for the health and safety of the community, we cannot hold the parade, but the community still needs the services of our local organizations such as our 2021 beneficiary Shore House NJ. In fact, it’s even more critical that we help support mental health access during this critical time,” notes Jamie McManus, Parade Committee Member. “Although we cannot be together, we can celebrate a significant milestone. Over the past eight years the Parade raised more than $200,000 for local community organizations. We look forward to being able to celebrate together at the 2022 Parade.”
