david_prown_120I was not looking forward to the near 2 1/2 hour movie and I didn't take a very good pre-movie nap.

Yet this 13th century period movie set in England does a very good job of capturing the emotions and power struggles of the day.  A little complicated understanding the different battling countries and the sub-story of one army overtly fighting for one country but actually fighting for another (England and France respectively).

Russell Crowe in his low key, manly-man way plays a character/role he has played before (in the sense of being soft spoken and seemingly gentle) and carries the movie.  Cate Blanchett has a strong role and is terrific.  Took a few minutes for me to get used to John Hurt but it worked.

Fighting scenes were good and not too gory.  Robin Hood himself is a brilliant marksman and those scenes are some of the best.  Watching the trajectory and path of the arrow (almost if there was a camera on the arrow itself) was great fun.

Also the credits at the end are most interesting in how they interspersed with watercolor images from the movie.
