All too often we only hear about elected officials under negative circumstances. This time, I would like to acknowledge the efforts and patriotism of Middletown Mayor Gerry Scharfenberger. As the sister of Medal of Honor recipient "Bud" Thorne who was killed during the Battle of the Bulge in December of 1944, I want to thank the mayor for his tireless work on behalf of both veterans and active military personnel.
I feel it is important that their memory and sacrifice always remain at the forefront of the American consciousness. To that end, Mayor Scharfenberger has been an enthusiastic supporter of implementing the new Medal of Honor curriculum for our schools to educate our children about the true meaning of heroism and the sacrifice of those who have served defending our freedoms and way of life. His work on behalf of troops currently stationed in Iraq and Afghanistan has been inspiring. Moreover, he always finds time to attend events at the local VFW and American Legion Posts to support our veterans. I also support his recent proposal to create a Veterans Affairs Committee in Middletown.
Thank you, Mayor Scharfenberger, for all of your efforts on behalf of our military personnel past and present.
