ATLANTIC HIGHLANDS, NJ – Each year the proceeds from the Front Porch Club’s Chilifest 2010 go to a wonderful local cause. This year their charity of choice is a non-profit group, GoSprouts.org, and their Learning Garden project on the grounds of Atlantic Highlands Elementary School for the 2010/2011 school year.

GoSprouts.org, formed by Atlantic Highlands residents, Laurie Brekke and Hope Hanlon, will design & build a garden and outdoor classroom while working with teachers at the school to weave the garden into various subjects of the standard curriculum. Mrs. Hanlon, a former teacher, says, “We’d like to utilize the garden & outdoor classroom to enhance traditional curriculum disciplines with hands-on-learning [in a garden setting] where children actively participate with their teachers and enjoy nature”.

The Front Porch Club’s Chilifest 2010 is scheduled for Saturday, October 2 at 3:00pm (rain date is Oct. 3rd). Admission is $25.00 per person. Chili entrants and children under the age of 12 will be admitted free.

The proceeds from Chilifest 2010 will help GoSprouts.org create this wonderful Learning Garden. In turn, the proceeds will benefit the children attending Atlantic Highlands Elementary who will soon be able to enjoy the garden while working on their studies. Mrs. Brekke says, “There is nothing more important than getting our kids out into nature & providing them with strong environmental ties early on as well as teaching them the importance of sustainability and healthy eating, which are tenets that will last them a lifetime”.
